Armed Forces Day 2018 held in Nuneaton was hosted and organised by Volunteers and Veterans from the Veterans Contact Point held again this year at Nuneaton Carnival Fields, we had over 30 market traders a mixture of military charities, veteran owned businesses, community organisations, representatives from Balfour Beatty, Warwickshire Police, Fire & Rescue, 159 Royal Logistics Corps (RLC) Reservists from Coventry, representatives from 30 Signals Regiment who held a veterans fitness challenge and donated £500 to the Balfour Beatty VCP Building refurbishment. The event was opened by NBBC Mayor Cllr Chris Watkins, David Owen MBE Deputising for Warwickshire’s Lord Lt and Marcus Jones MP for Nuneaton.
Throughout the day the event attracted a reasonable attendance from the local community with over 1000 people attending. The main arena event was the annual Cadet v Veteran Gun team, with 121 Nuneaton Sqn ATC winning again, by a very short margin. Feedback from stall holders, the community and VIP’s again praised the event organisers for providing a great atmosphere and a safe event.
The Veterans Contact Point will be hosted AFD 2019, hopefully at a more central venue which it hopes will attract more of the community to attend, it is also encouraging and looking for more community groups to be involved in attractions for the main arena. Although the VCP did not receive any external funding, and did not charge any stall holders, standing the costs associated with this annual #SaluteOurForces event, they felt that monies were well spent and justified.
